From African adventures to arguments about motor cars
For several years I had what must surely qualify as one of the best jobs in the world.
I was the founder, publisher, editor and writer of African Footsteps, an upmarket travel magazine covering Tanzania and East Africa. It was aimed at tourists and locals alike, and gave me a wonderful excuse to travel to extraordinary places, meet fascinating people and write about the things I discovered.
There were cheetah hunts in the Masai Mara, chimpanzees in Mahale, ancient ruins in Kilwa and adventures in places I might otherwise never have visited.
And then Precision Air asked me to produce their in-flight magazine, PAA.
That opened up a whole new world of stories. Beauty pageants, musicians, festivals, business, the workings of Dar es Salaam’s port and even motor reviews.
One particularly memorable article comparing Toyota and Nissan caused such a stir that people are apparently still arguing about it. I consider that a rather satisfactory result.
Of course, publishing two magazines wasn’t all glamorous travel and interesting people. There were deadlines, printing problems and the small matter of making the whole enterprise pay.
But I loved it. Every chaotic minute.
Neither magazine is published today, but some of the stories have survived. I’m hoping to share a selection of my favourites here.
A collection of Lynn’s published writing, bringing together memories, observations and adventures from Africa.
